As you travel East to the Northside of the island, just as you reach the outskirts of Punta Gorda, you’ll be welcomed with one of the most dramatic ocean views on Roatan.
An area known for its beauty and rich history, the community of Punta Gorda is home to the Garifuna people of Roatan. Along with it being the oldest settlement on Roatan, it was also the first Garifuna settlement in North America, established in 1796. The Garifuna culture today is well preserved, including their language, and brings an authentic flair to the community.
Sprawling white sand beaches and sparkling turquoise water surrounds this small town, far removed from the bustling tourist areas. There are a number of small, local restaurants serving delicious, authentic island fares such as conch or Machuca (a seafood soup with coconut milk) and frosty-cold beverages. Sundays are typically a busy day and when tourists may make the trek to visit Punta Gorda as there is traditional Garifuna drumming, dancing, and cuisine at the Flamingo Cultural Center.
